Abstract: Antimicrobial peptides(AMPs), a class of polypeptides induced by external conditions, are encoded by specific genes. In the era of facing the issue of “drug resistance” caused by antibiotics, AMPs own huge potential of benefits to mankind and replacing the antibiotics due to their characteristics of broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, scarce generation of drug-resistance, and antitumor virus, etc. However, the antibacterial activity and instability of natural AMPs should be enhanced, their toxicity should be reduced, and the large-scale production may be achieved by improving the industrial process. Therefore, the recent researches on the molecular modification and design, production and application of AMPS are summarized in detailed here.
