Abstract: Granule-bound starch synthase(GBSS)is a key enzyme to determine the amylose synthesis of plants. In monocots, GBSS includes two isoenzymes, designated as GBSSI and GBSSII. Dicot plants contain only one of GBSSII isoenzyme. The expression of gene GBSSI mainly controls the amylose synthesis in the storage organs such as seeds, embryos, and endosperms etc, while the expression of gene GBSSII mainly controls the amylose synthesis in the vegetative organs such as roots, stems, and leaves etc. In this paper, the latest research progress on expression regulation mechanism of GBSS genes in model plants and crops was reviewed. These results are expected to provide a reference for the study of GBSS genes from other plants.
