Abstract: Rare earth elements, also known as Lanthanide elements, their luminescent compounds have been widely used in the field of biotechnology due to their unique luminescent properties and coordination properties. Among them, research on the rare earth terbium(III)complexes shows a rapid tendency due to their excellent spectral properties. From the perspective of luminescent properties of terbium(III)complexes, this article discusses their luminescence mechanism. Subsequently, this article classifies and reviews the luminescent terbium(III)complexes via the binding of terbium(III)ions with different organic compounds and even with different nanomaterials. In addition, this article expatiates the applications of terbium(III)complexes in fluorescent probes, biosensors, drug delivery, cell imaging, cancer treatment and other related fields in detailed. Finally, this article prospects their future development trend and potential value.
