Abstract: As one of the most important post-translational modifications, sumoylation is widely found in eukaryotes and plays essential roles in the regulation of plant growth, development and stress responses. SUMO E3 ligase has the function of recognizing and selecting substrate, thus directly promotes the binding of SUMO protein and target proteins. At present,a variety of SUMO E3 ligases have been identified in plants. Here,we reviewed the roles of SUMO E3 ligases in plant adaptation to abiotic stresses, including drought, high salinity,high/low temperature, nutrient deficiency and heavy metal toxicity and prospected the future research direction in this field, aiming at providing references for future research on sumoylation in plants.
