Abstract: Rice as one of the most important crop which is the staple food for more than half of the population in the world. Maintaining high and stable rice yield are closely related to the national economic development. However, various plant diseases and insect pests pose to seriously yield production lost threat on rice. Breeding and plant high disease resistance cultivar is the most economic effective, safe, healthy and environment friendly rice disease breeding strategy, and in-depth studies in rice disease resistance molecular mechanism can provide important theoretical basis for cultivation of high disease resistance rice varieties. In the past two decades, scientists have made important progress in the molecular mechanism of rice disease resistance. This review summarizes the recent progress towards understanding the recognition and signaling events that govern rice innate immunity and the application in rice disease resistance breeding. We also discuss and prospect the challenges and future directions for research that will further our understanding of rice disease resistance.
